Gerard McAdam
EXPERIENCE IN THE INDUSTRY: 35 years working with and supporting people with disabilities.
MY ABILITIES: I thrive on challenges, find joy in others' happiness and possess a good sense of humour. I believe in allowing the person I work with to guide and determine the agenda.
MY STORY: I've worn many hats in my journey, each uniquely contributing to who I am today. It began with supporting family members facing physical and intellectual challenges. Then, the path led me to care for my parents during their battle with dementia in aged care.
Most of my professional life has been dedicated to assisting individuals with disabilities in finding meaningful employment. I've been part of the journey toward empowerment and inclusivity, from government roles to non-profit organisations.
For years, I managed a Supported Employment program, crafting ceramic items that went beyond mere objects—they symbolised empowerment and creativity. Later, I ventured into a large disability activity centre and eventually transitioned to providing personalised support, stepping into the homes and communities of those in need.
Let me share a few memorable stories from the many I've gathered. There was Lisa (not her real name), a vibrant soul with an intellectual disability and legal blindness. Living in a group home, she'd never experienced the joy of a holiday. Our adventure to Surfers Paradise theme parks became a defining moment. Climbing four stories to face a thrilling toboggan ride, with each step, we conquered fears, creating a memory that echoed with laughter and courage.
Then there's my foray into the world of AFL, especially the Western Bulldogs. Despite supporting a different team, I facilitated unforgettable moments for those I support. From securing cheer squad memberships to attending matches and training sessions, the joy on their faces after a brief chat with the players is unparalleled. Singing "Sons of the West" after a victory became a tradition, bonding us in shared triumph.
The Arts Project, a studio gallery supporting artists with intellectual disabilities, became a significant part of my journey. Discovering it while managing the supported employment ceramic studio, I advocated for more individuals to join, enabling them to fulfil their lives as artists.
My diverse journey has been about empowering others, fostering creativity, and bringing joy into the lives of those I've had the privilege to support.
Gerard.
